Data centers are quickly transitioning their rack level Battery Backup Units, or BBUs, to lithium-ion batteries for their Uninterruptible Power Supply, or UPS, reliability and longevity. Although powerful and effective energy sources, lithium-ion batteries also come with challenges. The challenges include single use packaging that has to be replaced and managed every time battery backup storage or changes are needed, and the limitations to transportation and storage volumes due to hazardous materials regulations.
